The Olympics are Here
Boy, what a historic day.
I just watched NBC's background lead-in to the Opening Ceremonies with Ted Koppel, and I was surprised that he mentioned Sudan and the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident. I guess they're not keeping politics entirely out of it, after all.
I can't believe Bush is the first American president to attend a foreign Olympics. I have to say I respect him for going. And his speech yesterday in Thailand was actually pretty solid...proffering criticism where it's deserved, yet also recognizing China for its accomplishments. Which is pretty much the situation in China today. It's not all good, it's not all bad.
Surfing other country's media coverage of this historic day. The Times of India's headline is indeed about China, but not the games. It's about China setting up what is alleged to be a "secret naval base" on the Coco Islands of Myanmar.
In other world (and somewhat Olympic-related) news, war has apparently broken out between Georgia and Russia over the tiny, breakaway "republic" of South Ossetia. Nearby Abkhazia could also get dragged in. Abkhazia is only a few miles from Sochi, the Russian resort chosen last year to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
