Obama
Suddenly the prospect of an Obama presidency is opening up whole new avenues of potential futures. I've been so disenchanted by government and policy by the last 8 (and, really, last 28) years, but under an Obama presidency suddenly being a diplomat could be a much more appealing job or career for me. Our diplomacy has been so unredeemingly assinine of late, but in the next 8+ years there is going to be enormous room for healing, and the U.S. will need talented, knowledgeable people do to the work in the trenches.
I don't think that this is something I need to jump into right away. But its something to keep on my radar/horizon. First, he still has to get elected. And if either McCain or Clinton win, these plans would be instantly scrapped. I don't want to work for a President who thinks its a wise idea to go to war with Iran, or defend Israel at any cost even if it means igniting hatred in the Middle East.
I think my current plan, to go abroad and immerse myself in another language and culture, is as good as any. And should he win perhaps I can continue to develop those language skills, and position myself for something in that line of work.
Another career that recently occurred to me is that of marketing. No, not the bad kind. And yes, I believe most of it is bad. It takes intelligent people but I could never live with myself being a corporate marketer. Their job is to convince the consumer he or she needs something that he or she doesn't really need. The enormous sway that advertising has in this day and age is one of the clearest indicators of what is wrong with the world today. But the other side —the anti-corporatists—need advertising and marketing too. And those marketers need to be equally sharp and cunning, if not more so.
